STONEHAM CUP FINALS DAY at Stoneham GC 15/9/25
Stoneham GC, Stoneham Cup Winners 2025
The forecast for the Stoneham Cup Finals Day was not looking good and we were wondering whether we need tothink about re-arranging as we were not even sure the course would be open. However, as the teams started arriving, it began to brighten up and as the ladies started to approach the first tee, apart from the wind howling like a “whirling dervish”, we were able to kick off the semi-finals of the 2025 Stoneham Cup.
First up was Rowlands who won the toss and elected to tee off and Diana Littler hit the first shot of the day followed by Linda Compton from Bramshott Hill. Lee-on-the-Solent were the next to tee off and Millie Atthis was first on the tee followed by Julie Newbold from Stoneham.
The matches went off alternately one by one and at the turn it was hard to see who was going to make their way through to the afternoon finals. As the morning went on, the results started to come in but it was still pretty even all the way round and we had to wait until virtually all the matches were finished, quite a few at the 18th, to find out that Bramshott Hill and Stoneham had managed to qualify for the afternoon finals.
With a very quick turnaround, the two teams made their way back to the first tee for the afternoon Finals. The wind was still howling but the sun began to break through.
Jo Gadney from Stoneham kicked off the afternoon matches and Linda Compton from Bramshott Hill followed. It was lovely to see so many spectators giving both teams their support. By 3pm they were all underway and at the turn Stoneham were up in 4 of the matches, Bramshott up in 2 matches and one was all square so still all to play for. As the afternoon wore on, we started to get results in. Carol Owen from Stoneham came in with the first win, followed soon after by Jane Palmgren also from Stoneham. The wind had died down slightly by this time, making it slightly easier for the teams to complete their matches. The 3rd win for Stoneham came in shortly later from Lynn Hayward. The home team just needed one more match to clinch the Cup, however, the next result came in with a win from Jo Renyard from Bramshott. The spectators were then given a treat when the first match was still being fought and was all square on the 18th. Jo Gadney from Stoneham managed to nip it in the bud on the 19th and a result was in. Stoneham had won the Cup on their home turf.
It was a great afternoon and I would like to congratulate all the teams for qualifying for the finals day. Congratulations to Stoneham for winning the Stoneham Cup and also congratulations to Bramshott for reaching the finals day, the first time ever in the history of the Club!!
I would like to thank Stoneham for the use of their course, which was in fantastic condition. Our thanks go to Matt and his greens team, to the office staff, Lauren and Shah and to Rachael and all the catering team. A huge thanks also goes to the Lady Captain, Laureen Barnes for acting as our morning starter and for all her help during the day.

What a difference a day makes. 12 months on from last year's event, which had to be cancelled due to inclement weather, the 2025 Alresford Cup went ahead in the most glorious autumn sunshine.
