Hayling Ladies Golf Club set up the Hayling Trophy in 2004 based on the format of the Stoneham Cup, but with a team of 5 singles matches aimed at higher handicap golfers. A growing and extremely successful competition, it was however capped at 20 clubs due to administrative constraints. In 2022 Hayling Ladies GC handed the future organisation over to HLG so that any Hampshire Club wishing to take part could enter. HLG was delighted to be taking over a very well-respected competition that provides competitive match-play golf for ladies with a Handicap Index of 24.1 and above (maximum HI 36.0).
Following the 2024/25 season a review of the rules has been undertaken with the revised rules available below.
There was a tantalising mix of sunshine, rolling fairways and anticipation as the teams arrived at Wellow Golf Club for the Finals of the Hayling Trophy 2025.
Lynda Hewer from Rowlands was first on the tee on the Rydown course at exactly midday, she was up against Fran Cole from Shanklin & Sandown. The teams followed at 9 minute intervals and by a little after 12.30 they were all on their way.
All the teams were pretty close after the first 6 holes with Shanklin just edging out in front in 3 of the matches.
However, at the turn, the first 3 matches were back to all square and Shanklin were forging ahead in the last 2 matches.
It was great to see so many spectators from both Shanklin and Rowlands following the teams and the weather did not disappoint as the sun carried on shining for most of the day.
Blackwater was chosen as the back 9 and by the 13th hole, Shanklin were up in 4 of the 5 matches and the first result came in. Victoria Guildford from Shanklin, the last match out, had won 6 and 4. Julie Miller from Shanklin then came through winning 4 and 3 and the first match out between Lynda and Fran went to a nail-biting 18th hole. Fran managed to sink her putt and finished the match 1 up. The remaining 2 matches were called in and the 2025 Hayling Trophy winners were decided.
Our County Captain, Eilean Cunningham was delighted to present the trophies at the end of a great Final. The trip over the water was definitely worth it for the IOW team who hadn’t lifted the trophy since 2013.
We would like to thank Sarah Hornby, Lady Captain of Wellow for her help during the day, and to the ladies at the halfway point who provided a very welcome array of home-made cakes for everyone.
Also, a huge thank you to all at Wellow GC who helped to make the day so successful and for allowing us the use of their course.
The 2025/6 competition will start on 1st September 2025. The draw will be available in July.
