The Hampshire Second Team gathered early at West Surrey Golf Club ready to challenge a young and hugely talented team from Surrey. The welcome we received from the West Surrey members was warm and the Hampshire team spirit high, as the foursomes matches teed off.
All the games were too close to call, giving spectators and supporters a tense morning. Georgina Carter and Tammy Andrews were all square teeing off the eighteenth, the match could have gone either way. A perfect three wood second shot from G to within 15 feet on the par five hole, resulted in a brilliant birdie to win 1 up. Stunning!
Next, the experienced Diane Oram and Becky Scott parred the last to win 1up, meaning Hampshire led by 2 to 1 at lunchtime.
More great golf was played in the afternoon singles with the result uncertain right until the very end. Surrey fielded two 13 year olds and a 14 year old and their golf was fantastic, mature beyond their years. They helped to win 4 points for Surrey and this was enough to take the match 5 to 4. It could not have been closer!
Thank you to the players already mentioned plus Aileen Simpson and Izzy Lawson, everyone played their hearts out for Hampshire. Additionally, President Jane spent the whole day supporting and Surrey’s Jane hosted with friendliness and good humour.
All in all, a memorable day played with great camaraderie at a magnificent golf course. The Hampshire girls were within a whisker and we take forward many positives as we approach the remaining Stovold fixtures.
