Once again we welcomed eight counties from across the south of England to participate in the annual junior girls' event at Alresford Golf Club. By ten o'clock the clubhouse was packed to the brim with young golfers, their parents and county CJOs, all ready and raring to get out on the course. There was a little nip in the air but bright sunshine was in abundance as well, making the conditions for this competition pretty perfect.
As is tradition in this competition, each three ball of girls was accompanied around Alresford by a member of the ladies section, acting as a host or shepherdess for the round. In addition, each three ball was also comprised of members from different counties, offering the girls a great opportunity to make a new connection.
18 holes went by in a flash and groups of girls were soon making their way back into the clubhouse, scorecards in hand. In this competition the girls have the opportunity to play a individual qualifying stableford but it's the team score that decides the victor of this annual competition. With the best 4 scores aggregated to form the team score, the 2025 competition was close. In fact, three teams had to be separated by count back to identify the team that placed third, it was the Dorset team who rallied on the back nine to secure third place with a team score of 124. Berkshire were this year's runners' up with 135 points however, by a margin of five points, Surrey were this year's winners with a team score of 140. A significant contribution to this score was the fabulous 40 points that belonged to team captain Grace Warmsley. Having achieved the best score of the day, Grace was presented with a small memento from Alresford Cup founder and Hampshire President Mary Rook.
As always, there are many people that contribute to making this day such a success. In addition to thanking all of the players, the CJOs and parents for their support of this event and for their participation, we'd also like to thank the greens staff, bar and catering team and members at Alresford Golf Club for allowing us to continue hosting this fantastic event every year. Thanks also go to all the shepheresses, Lady Captain Polly Church and founder Mary Rook, and to our Hampshire team Pauline Davies and Jill England, who all work incredibly hard to ensure the enduring success of this event.
Well done to team Surrey! We look forward to seeing everyone back at Alresford on 20th September 2026 for next year's competition.
