Foursomes Championships Barton on Sea GC

Barton On Sea Golf Club

The morning of Wednesday 16th April was bright and clear as players gathered from all over the County and the Channel Islands to compete in the Foursomes Championships. The  host club, a jewel of the South Coast, was Barton on Sea Golf Club. The course is set on cliffs with views across the Solent and Christchurch Bay. A brisk Force 6, known locally as the "Barton Breeze" was blowing from early on, and this meant that the course was a fierce challenge.

The field of 68 ladies, some of the strongest pairings in the county, took on the challenge presented by the course . The Host Club generously provided Starters and Marshalls to assist the flow of the day including the Club Captain, Past President and the Ladies Captain

This Championship is for pairings up to a combined HI of 30.0. The strong conditions, the firm fairways and relentless wind brought the many water hazards into play. It was a test of mind and spirit as well as golf.

The Champions and winners of the Gross prize with 80, were Louise Caplen and Becky Scott, both of Stoneham Golf Club. The Runners-up, pipped by only one on 81, were Diane Oram of Basingstoke Golf Club and her partner Kerry Smith of Waterlooville Golf Club.

The winners of the Best Nett Trophy, were the new County Captain Eilean Cunningham and her partner Carole Sparling both of North Hants Golf Club. They scored a highly creditable 73 .The Runners-up, again being only one shot behind on 74, were Jane Bennett and Sarah Green both of Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club.

The Staff and members of Barton on Sea Golf Club were wonderful hosts for the competition and our thanks go out to them. The course itself was also a worthy winner, being largely undefeated in the toughest of conditions.
